[edit] Defragging Part 2
DO NOT DEFRAG SD/FLASH RAM It's not just because of "excessive wear" while the memory does have a limited amount of writes, it is a very high number... Defragmenting will not do anything on flash RAM (Random Access Memory!) In order to reduce writing to the same bit or same area of the card too much and wearing out that sector (killing the whole card), the controller for ram writes every bit sequentially, and then repeats back at the beginning (where free space allows) so all bits are written once before it ever writes to a bit a 2nd time, defragging would only move a bit from 1 place, to the next free least used bit (not necessarily in sequential order) thus defragging your flash ram will only make it worse.
To the user that submitted the 2gb AGL SD card, what do you mean by saying "M3 perfect sd only"? Aren't all SD cards M3 perfect sd only?

Does anyone know if what FAT the CF Card is formated in will affect speed/gameplay? Or in other words, Which FAT is the best?

Anybody know of a particularly good card? my PNY doesn't seem to want to do DMAx4. does x1 fine, but the castlevania movie is like at two seconds refresh rate. the meteos opener is fine. --Jadenguy 03:31, 14 April 2006 (EDT)
The SD Toshiba 1GB JAPAN doesn't work on GBA Mode. I'm using e18 firmware and Passkey2 K2-RAM03.gba, what is very strange, since for patching Passkey2 I used GBA MODE!!! Does anyone has a solution for it? Does anyone knows where can I patch my M3 firmware to an old version? Thanks! -- Bsides 01:53, 26 April 2006 (EDT)
I think some cards have issues being recognised in GBA mode. If you can't boot into NDS mode, and it won't work in GBA mode, you need to get hold of an SD card that will let you go into GBA mode. --leoedin 15:09, 26 April 2006 (EDT)
I have used mini SD transcen 512MB and works like a charm. The kington 1GB refuses to work ta all in NDS mode. In GBA mode i can see folders and no files though i managed to update the software to e22 (very strange)
[edit] Change page layout
Would anyone object changing the layout to sort the information by memory size, as opposed to sorting by brand in alphabetical order? An example can be found at miniSD by size. I figure if someone's looking for a specific brand, they can do a find on the page.
Also, are their difference of how a 512MB version of a card would work compared to a 1/2/4GB version?

That seems like a reasonable thing to do. I'd imagine that most people aren't shopping for a paticular brand, but instead for a paticular capacity. However, there may be a difference on the different capacities of a paticular brand, and reordering by capacity would make it difficult to compare capacities. --Software2 3:55 AM, July 26th, 2006 (PST)
Hey, I was thinking about doing that actually. I want to make the page sorted by size and type, but I also want to make the played look like the ROM compatibilty page. Tell me your thoughts.
Here's an example:
| Brand | Size | Working? | Castlevania | GBA Mode | Picture | Notes/Additional info |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crucial Technologies CompactFlash | 1GB | Works | 5 | Picture | Works with 1x DMA and Firmware E16 | |
| Foto Source | 1GB | Works | Works with 1x/4x DMA and Firmware E15 |

I vote yes on that. I think that looks good, although instead of having it like the NDS compatibility list, I prefer each setting to get its own column (firmware and fastboot setting). Of course, the downside to the tables is that for each person that tests the card, it'll take one more row, making the page longer than it is now.

Go for it! Perhaps we could even group it more like the rom compatibility - have a different page for each size (I would also agree with the sizes)

I like the idea of seperate pages for different sizes, too. Also, Bladeonfire, could you give an example of what you mean by each setting having it's own column? Thanks.

Couldn't the speed rating of the SD card be used instead? I had heard that Class 6 cards run fast enough to keep up with the Castlevania test. 68.223.174.111 22:44, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Formatting as FAT32
Is there any Windows tool to format an SD card with larger clusters than Windows XP will allow you to use? (XP's format only lets you do 16K with a 2GB cluster). --Firon 18:26, 7 August 2006 (PDT)
[edit] Defragging
There's a note telling people that defragging the card will improve performance... Having unfragmented files may help a little bit, but not as much as a HD since a flash card has no moving r/w heads. To "defrag" a card, one really needs to copy the files off the card, format it, and then copy the files back. Never, never run a defrag utility on a flash card! It will put an enormous amount of wear on the card and greatly reduce its life.
